Generic Procardia XL (Nicardia Retard Tablets), also known as Generic Adalat CC is used for the treatment of coronary heart disease, Chronic stable angina pectoris (angina of effort) and treatment of hypertension. Lowering blood pressure helps to reduce the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions.
Nifedipine tablets are classified in a group of medications called calcium channel blockers. Generic Procardia XL works by relaxing the muscles of your heart and blood vessels. Nicardia Retard tablets are manufactured by Unique Pharmaceutical Laboratories in the strengths of 10 mg, 20 mg, and 30 mg. The active ingredient present in Nicardia Retard Tablets is Nifedipine. Each tablet of Nicardia contains 10 mg, 20 mg or 30 mg of Nifedipine.
Uses of Generic Adalat CC / Generic Procardia XL (Nicardia Retard Tablets by Unique)
Nifedipine (Nicardia Retard Tablets) is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain). Generic Adalat CC is in a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers that relaxes (widens) your blood vessels (veins and arteries), which makes it easier for the heart to pump and reduces its workload.
Generic Procardia XL (Nicardia Retard Tablets) – Dosage
As far as possible the dosage of Nicardia Retard Tablet must be customised to meet the needs of the individual patient being treated. Generic Procardia XL tablets (Generic Adalat CC) are swallowed whole with a little liquid, irrespective of meal times. Grapefruit juice should be to be avoided when undergoing treatment with Nifedipine tablets. The tablets should not be chewed or broken up. The normal dose for Generic Procardia XL tablets is given below:
For the Treatment of Coronary Heart Disease:
Chronic stable angina pectoris (angina of effort): One Generic Procardia XL 30 mg tablet once daily (1 x 30 mg/day)
For the Treatment of Hypertension:
One Generic Procardia XL 30 mg tablet once daily (1 x 30 mg/day)
How to Use Generic Procardia XL (Nicardia Retard Tablets)
Take Generic Adalat CC exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results.
Take this medicine on an empty stomach. Do not crush, chew, break or open the capsule. Swallow it whole. Breaking or opening it may cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.
Call your doctor if you have ongoing vomiting or diarrhea or if you are sweating more than usual. These conditions can lead to severely low blood pressure. If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using this medicine. You may need to stop using it for a short time without first talking to your doctor, even if you feel fine. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You may need to use blood pressure medication for the rest of your life.
Your blood pressure will need to be checked often and you may need other blood tests at your doctor’s office. Visit your doctor regularly. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take the extra dose to make up the missed dose.
Nifedipine (Nicardia Retard Tablets) – Contraindications
Nifedipine tablets must not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Nifedipine or to any of the inactive ingredients present in Nicardia Retard tablets.
Nifedipine tablets (Nicardia Retard) are contraindicated in pregnancy before week 20 and during breastfeeding.
Nicardia Retard tablets must not be used in cases of cardiovascular shock. Nifedipine tablets must not be used in patients with Kock pouch.
Nifedipine Side effects
The most common side effect reported with Nifedipine tablets (Nicardia Retard) was peripheral edema. The following side effects were reported with an incidence of 3% or less in daily doses up to 90 mg:
Body as a Whole/Systemic: chest pain, leg pain
Central Nervous System: paresthesia, vertigo
Musculoskeletal: leg cramps
Respiratory: epistaxis, rhinitis
Urogenital: impotence, urinary frequency
Get emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction including hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect while using Generic Adalat CC (Nicardia Retard tablets) such as:
• worsening angina
• feeling like you might pass out
• feeling short of breath, swelling in your hands or feet
• fast or pounding heartbeats
• numbness or tingly feeling
• jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
• chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling
Less serious side effects of Generic Procardia XL may include:
• a headache, dizziness
• drowsiness, tired feeling
• nausea, constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain
• sleep problems (insomnia)
• mild rash or itching
• joint pain, leg cramps
• warmth, redness, or tingly feeling under your skin
• urinating more than usual
Overdose symptoms may include severe dizziness, pounding heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, and feeling like you might pass out. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.
Warnings & Precautions When using Generic Procardia XL (Generic Adalat CC Tablets)
You should not use Generic Adalat CC tablets if you are allergic to Nifedipine (the active ingredient). If you have any of these other conditions, your doctor may need to adjust your dose or order special tests:
• kidney disease
• liver disease (especially cirrhosis)
• coronary artery disease
• congestive heart failure
• digestive problems
Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with Generic Procardia XL and lead to potentially dangerous effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit products with your doctor. Do not increase or decrease a number of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall. Drinking alcohol can lower your blood pressure further and may increase certain side effects of this medicine.
Nifedipine and Grapefruit Juice
Grapefruit juice inhibits the cytochrome P450 3A4 system. Administration of Nifedipine (Nicardia Retard tablets) together with grapefruit juice results in increased plasma concentrations and prolonged action of Nifedipine due to an increase of drug bioavailability. As a result, the blood pressure lowering effect may be increased. After regular intake of grapefruit juice, this effect can last for at least 3 days after the last intake of grapefruit juice.
Nifedipine During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Nifedipine has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C. Nifedipine (Nicardia Retard tablets) is contraindicated in pregnancy before week 20. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Nifedipine has been shown to produce teratogenic findings in rats, mice, and rabbits. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
Nifedipine passes into the breast milk. As there is no experience of possible effects on infants, breastfeeding should first be stopped if treatment with Nifedipine tablets (Nicardia Retard) becomes necessary during the breastfeeding period.Do not use this medicine without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
